As the Spark Flies Upward is a novel centered around four generations of a family living on the banks of a river in the Depression-era south. The story follows the lives of Grace Canton Kelley, her sister Athena, and their two best friends as they respond to the turmoil caused by an alcoholic, abusive stepfather and the poverty and dangers that surround their town. Grace, the meek, bookish second-born, grows up in the shadow of her magical, beautiful, yet dangerous elder sister;her timidity and lack of self-confidence are only surpassed by her passion to protect those she loves and the burden of responsibility she feels to hold her family together. The book visits the unspoken, unyielding bond of loyalty between siblings, yet highlights the stark contrast between Grace and Athena, shown perhaps most vividly by the way they ultimately deal with the abuse of their mother. Most of all, the book offers a poignant look at the problem of evil and its lasting reverberations within the intertwined fates of a family. As the Spark Flies Upward is a compelling story filled with love, laughter, pain, grief, vengeance, forgiveness, and hope.

Having just finished "The Help", I read "As the Spark Flies Upward". I knew this was the author's first novel, so I did not know what to expect. It took me a few chapters to get the rhythm and style of the thing, but by then I was hooked. I found myself absorbed into the world of Tennessee in the depression-era 1930's. I was pulled into the lives of the characters and their often gritty, occasionally humorous, but always engaging situations. It is a serious work, substantial in scope and rich in poetic language. There is some real edge-of-your-seat excitement in this book, some intense human drama. It is not a casual read. This is a sit back, curl up and lose yourself novel. Well worth the time and highly recommended.

Early on in this novel, I found myself emotionally pulled in, and it never let up. I like that. The flow of interaction between the characters made me cringe, made me smirk, made me upset, and made me gasp with inspired awe. The author provides glimpses which seem to delve so far inside some of the characters that I wondered how anyone could put those ideas into words. I enjoyed this novel so much. I highly recommend it.
Despite the sad truths of poverty and abuse the reader helps Grace look for Hope as the story unfold. Well done.
The book is written from the perspective of an elderly Grace (the second born daughter) as she recants past events that have shaped her life. There are many instances of foreshadowing and weaving through out time. Grace's character is extremely well-developed, showing feelings of inferiority towards her gorgeous older sister, a form of denial over her own mother's serious short-comings, and the process by which she discovered her life long love. Throughout the book one can easily grasp the confusion and turmoil of a family that's been caught in the wake of poverty, compounded with an alcoholic, abusive, adulterous father and an absent working mother. It is definitely a moving book, which showcases Grace's struggle to overcome what life has dealt her.
I was given this book by a friend, and honestly, I didn't expect much. I will often grab a book just for some mindless reading, which was what I expected with this one, so I was so surprised to find that I absolutely loved it.

As Sparks Fly Upward is Grace's story of her life and family during the Great Depression and World War II years, as she recounts her memories as an elderly woman with all the wisdom and hindsight time brings. Mary, Grace's mother, is remarried to the alcoholic, abusive Dan, whom she determinedly continues to love "till death do us part." Grace's sister Thena is stunningly beautiful and as as wild as Grace is reserved, with a burning hatred for her stepfather. The conflict between the characters leads us on a winding, pleasant and sometimes painful journey to its inevitable conclusion.

Sometimes if a book isn't very good I'll skip to the end just to find out what happens, but I became so engrossed in the story, and the characters seemed so real, that I felt like I was an onlooker to actual events in their lives. Books do that to me sometimes, but rarely, and this was one of those books.

Yes, there is tragedy, as the book alludes to early on, and yes, I cried at several points, but the story ends with the promise of love--and yes--with Hope.

If you're looking for an engrossing read that draws you into a very human story, I highly recommend As Sparks Fly Upward.
I found it hard to believe this was the author's first novel as the book pulled me in and I finished it over the course of a weekend. The characters were well developed and seemed so real and I found myself agonizing with them over the dilemmas that they faced and contemplating the story long after I finished. The book takes place in Depression era south and it took me about a chapter or two to get fully used to the style of writing but then I could easily flow with the style. The author painted vivid pictures with her words so I could easily picture the characters. The book can get heavy at times but the author does insert some light-hearted moments in there as well. I found myself really relating to the main character Grace and rooting for her throughout the story.
As the Spark Flies Upward is the story of a girl (Grace) growing up in small-town Tennessee in the 1930s, dealing with various tragedies and evil that befall her and her family. The main antagonist is her step-father, Dan Brown, a drunk who is physically abusive and adulterous, and oftentimes simply absent - but her mother (Mary) is equally influential, as the selfless soul who's always thinking of others, and always giving second, third, fourth and fifth chances - for better or ill.

I found the novel to be very moving. The main characters were complex - even Dan is not all bad - and the plot holds your attention as the tragedy (or should I say tragedies) unfold. While this is undoubtedly a tale of woe, it's nevertheless infused with hope - and it's that careful balance between doom and redemption that makes the story work.

I found tears in my eyes on several occasions, and couldn't put it down as the final drama unfolded. The story is beautifully written, and I'm still thinking about it several days later. Highly recommended.
I love the characters and the time frame of this novel. I will definitely look for more novels by this author.
